Crianza Edulis  Bodegas Altanza Rioja  2005 ¥ ¥

Bodegas Altanza -located in Fuenmayor, at the heart of Upper Rioja- is surrounded by tempranillo vineyards.
It is thus sited in one of the most fertile and privileged lands of the Denomination/ Apellation of Origin Rioja.

Up to 60% of the grapes come from our 320 ha estate (790 acres approx.). Around two hundredhectares of
the total surface are assigned to grape-growing,whereas 70 hectares of the property are planted with olive trees.

The upkeeping of the vineyards is always manual. The vines are not fertilised to achieve sustainable,long-term
productions and to ensure a good alcohol content later, nor are herbicides used.
Spur and cane pruning and clearing are made every year to ensure a reduced yet optimum grape production.

The rest of the grapes that come into the winery are provided by experienced vine growers, whohave been
working for us since the beginning. They are given a few technical guidelines, but we fully trust them as
they are aware of the importanceof quality and the respect for traditional, non-aggressive viticulture.

Produced entirely from Tempranillo grapes, grown on old vines. The grapes are hand picked and lightly pressed.
The aging in French and American oak casks for 12 months and further refining in the bottle for 6 months
before release result in an intense, garnet red color with purple highlights; fresh, ripe fruit aromas; and round,
vigorous palate that continues through the long finish.

Deep ruby. Ripe red and dark berry aromas are given an exotic twist by sweet vanilla, mocha and sandalwood.
Strong oak notes mark the lush dark berry and kirsch flavors and add a slight bitterness, not to mention tannic
structure. With air the fruit builds, beating up on the oak pretty well and carrying nicely through the long,
spicy finish.Impressively persistent and juicy stuff, with head-turning depths of lush, concentrated fruit.

Robert Parker - 95 Points!

The 2001 Altanza Reserva Miro is brilliantly made. It has a gorgeous Miro painting reproduced on the label
attached to the extra heavy custom-made glass bottle.
Reportedly, the Martinez family paid $80,000 to the Miro estate for the rights to theartwork.
Remarkably, the wine stands up to the art with no problem.
The super-spicy,toasty, espresso roast, chocolate and blackberry aromas lead to a seamless, layered,
rich wine that admirably combines elegance with power. It is a tour de force in Rioja winemaking.

Lealtanza Artistas Espanoles Reserva Dali  Bodegas Altanza  Rioja  2004   ¥30,000
3 bottles

The 2004 Lealtanza Reserva Dali features a gorgeous Salvador Dali painting on the label attachedto the
heavy custom-made bottle.
As with back year’s Miro label, the wine stands up to the quality of the art work.
The Tempranillo grapes were sourced from 75-year-old estate vineyards and aged for 12 months in new
Allier French oak. Opaque purple-colored, the wine features a splendid perfume of wood smoke, vanilla,
fresh bar, mineral, spice bar, black cherry and blackberry liqueur.
On the palate the wine is obviously younthful yet elegant. There are layers of spicy black fruits, nice tannin,
excellent balance and along finish. Give it 5-7 years in the cellar and drink it through 2030”
The Wine Advocate by Robert Parker – 93 points

“A special Rioja, dark ruby opaque in colour, made from 75+ year old vine, aged 12 months in Allier French
oak,and displaying a nose of sweet oak with dark plum notes. Somewhat closed at this stage,it’s still big and
full onthe palate with fresh and dried black fruit flavours and soft tannins on the finish.
Judging from older vintages, this wine has a bright future”
